Sister Brother Freddie Anne Willing, with the backing of the house, stormed Riley Plaza in Salem on Saturday. By storm, she pulled up her Subaru across the street and safely parked. The Sisterly Subaru was filled with materials needed by the local unhoused community, to be distributed by the Salem Survival Program.
Sister Betty Esém valiantly went through the materials from the former Bliss Bag program, adding a large plastic bin of hygiene items to the Sisterly Subaru. The next stop was our holy storage unit of the divine where another bin was filled with toys, overflow from past Sister Santa events*. Health Innovations provided a generous supply of condoms, lube, and informational cards for other free services.
And finally, shopping. We devoted several hundred dollars of community funds to buying clothes, hygiene supplies, and sturdy bags for people to contain their belongings.
Upon delivering the materials the response from the community was immediate and powerful. People were incredibly thankful for the donations, which we could only make because of how much the community has supported and trusted the Boston Sisters.
Salem has been an active area for Massachusetts’ unhoused population for sometime. There are resources in the area, but there are not enough for the need. More recently the city passed an anti-camping ordinance and enforced it before all conditions were met. Many Salem residents lost their homes and their belongings in the process. with no immediate housing alternative.
Sister Brother Freddie Anne Willing wants to take a moment to applaud and stand by those working to meet the needs of our most vulnerable community members, including:
